Peer Tutoring English Charity Project Launched

On Saturday, February 27, the Peer Tutoring ecumenical charity project, organized by St. Sophia Religious Association of Ukrainian Catholics (SSRA), Inc. in collaboration with the Youth Commission of the Eparchy of Saskatoon, began. Volunteer instructors from the USA, Canada and Ukraine take part in the project. For ten weeks, they will work with underprivileged young people: displaced persons from the occupied Crimea and Donbas; children of servicemen who defend the integrity of Ukraine; orphans, semi-orphans, children from large families. A significant percentage of them are students of the Odesa Naval Lyceum (ONL). The advantage of this project is one-to-one approach. Moreover, most teachers are young native speakers. Volunteers will prepare the students for the their ESL External Independent Testing (EIT) putting an emphasis on improving speaking skills.

For four consecutive years, St. Sophia Religious Association of Ukrainian Catholics has been supporting the Odesa Naval Lyceum through online English lessons, workshops in preparation for ESL EIT in the native village of Patriarch Josyf Slipyj, and participation of cadets in the ESL Charitable Summer School in Ukraine. Peer Tutoring is the yet another educational initiative that gives high school students the opportunity to improve their foreign language skills as part of the ESLforONL project. According to Iryna Ivankovych, President of SSRA, Peer Tutoring has become possible through successful cooperation with the Youth Commission of the Eparchy of Saskatoon. This project will be a new bridge between the youth of the two continents. The training will continue until May 9.
