Andrew Sorokowski was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1950. He grew up in San Francisco and was educated at the University of California (B.A., J.D.), Harvard University (M.A.), and the School of Slavonic and East European Studies of the University of London (Ph.D.) From 1984 to 1987 he was the first researcher on religion in Ukraine at Keston College, England. In 1989 he served as archivist on the chancery staff of Major Archbishop Myroslav Ivan Cardinal Lubachivsky in Rome. He was managing editor of the journal Harvard Ukrainian Studies from 1993 to 1997.
Dr. Sorokowski taught history at St. Basil College Seminary in Stamford, CT, Assumption College at Worcester, MA, the University of Massachusetts in Boston and Lowell, and the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine and online. From 2000 to 2014, he served as Historical Research and Information Specialist at the US Department of Justice, Environment and Natural Resources Division in Washington, DC. From 2007 to 2021, Dr. Sorokowski published the monthly column “Cross Currents” in the Ukrainian Weekly.
Dr. Sorokowski has edited and contributed to works on Ukrainian and general church history, and published numerous reviews, articles, and translations of historical and poetic texts. He lives in Sonoma, California.
