In the mind of the average Ukrainian, the Patriarch of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church Cardinal Josyf Slipyj (1892-1984) can be seen as a Confessor of the Faith, Head of the Silent Church of the Catacombs, a theologian, a scholar, and a patriot for his people. His intellectual brilliance, depth of reasoning and steadfast faith permeated his scholarly works, homilies, pastoral letters, and reviews, while his wide range of interests included the history of the Church, theology, martyrology, and many others.
